Magic Folders: Add custom hooks to folders that trigger customizable AI automations

Magic Folders

We’re excited to announce a highly requested feature, which we are calling “Magic Folders”. Our users have been asking for the ability for AI to do things automatically for them, such as automatically summarizing files, organizing things, removing duplicates, or triggering other behaviors. Check it out!

Perhaps they want PDFs sorted by topic, or they want to add something to a running bibliography. All of these kinds of actions and much more are now a few simple clicks away, in a fully customizable workflow. The process is simple: in the details panel for a folder, you can turn a regular folder into a Magic Folder, with some visual sparkles to distinguish it. Then, you can write a prompt, add trigger conditions, and specify the model you want to use. Any time that trigger occurs (such as a file added to the folder), the magic action will trigger, and the traces of the agent’s action will appear in both the magic folder’s and the file’s history. It’s as simple as that! We’re stoked to see how you use them!

🧹 Improvements

  • You now get fancy progress bars for both files and folders, in both peek and preview mode. This makes it much easier to understand what’s going on in your system especially on slow connections.
  • You now get a visual indication when a folder is empty, vs when the folder’s contents couldn’t be loaded, or another error occurred. If you’re stuck offline waiting for a folder to load, you might be able to find a fun new way to “break out” of this mode. 🕹️

🐞 Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where users would get permanently logged out due to a race condition
  • Fixed several problems with flashback mode, where resizing the window would cause the logic to error.
  • Your content details now sync faster after we revamped our content diffing logic
  • The “new text file” button now works on desktop, too
  • Button styles were harmonized across several surfaces
