Windows (and Linux) Apps in Private Beta

Windows (and Linux) App in Private Beta

Because it took us a bit longer than expected to build our Windows app, we wanted to give this week's launch a "two-for-one" with the parallel launch of our Linux build for both x86 and ARM architectures.

With regards to the windows side, this is the culmination of multiple large efforts, and we couldn’t be more excited to have you all try it out. Over the next few weeks, our team will be extra responsive to user bug reports for Windows, as we carry this app across the finish line. That said, we have some much, much more significant news to share in a few weeks, so keep your eyes and ears perked.

For now, signed-in users should be able to download and test out the Windows app!

Windows Support Details

Some aspects of the app may be potentially missing extensive Windows support, but we’ve tried to be comprehensive with our self-assessment below:

  • Browsing Poly files: supported, tested
  • Local file sync: supported, tested
  • Pinning files offline: supported, tested
  • Notification tray: supported, some rough edges reported
  • Desktop custom context menus: not yet supported
  • Declared file type association for .polychat and other file types: supported, some rough edges
  • Multi-user: not supported (one logged in user at a time)
  • Command line tool: supported, not fully tested
  • Local .mcpb for Claude CoWork: forthcoming
  • Local agent skill support: forthcoming

🧹 Improvements

  • Optimized some message types to reduce the amount of app chatter, saving you bytes!
  • You can now create and save Custom Properties for your files, letting you browse, sort, and group by properties you define.
  • We optimized our upload pipeline to send fewer messages between sides, making them faster and more performant
  • We introduced a better control flow mechaism for edits, making offline edits more reliable.

🐞 Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue with uploading files larger than 100mb, which would fail in certain instances
  • Fixed an issue with drag-and-drop on desktop, where dragging files in may sometimes fail
  • Addressed an issue with uploads that would make the children sometimes fail due to timing conflicts
  • We fixed several issues where editing, moving, or renaming the file shortly after upload would cause the change to fail.
