Announcing our $8M Seed Round

Announcing our $8M Seed Round

For 40 years the file browser hasn’t changed.

Today, we’re launching with $8 million in seed funding to rebuild the file browser into something more intelligent, searchable, and delightful.

The world is in the middle of a data explosion. We’re generating and using more files than ever, but the apps we’re using to manage our files don’t even understand them.

It’s time for file browsers to become useful. When you search for “dog”, it should show you content with dogs in it, not just files with “dog” in the name! When you want to edit, convert, summarize, or organize a file, your browser should do that, too.

Your files tell the story of your life, but when you need a specific one, you usually can’t even find it anymore. Why can’t your file browser find it for you, or cross-reference it when you have a question? Prompting can give an LLM a million tokens of context. With Poly, you can give it the next trillion.

Check out Abhay’s announcement here, and the TechCrunch article about our backstory and what led us to our conviction in the file browser.

If you’re reading this, that means you already have access to poly.app and have probably received an invite code from us in the past. If you need a new account or want to refer a friend, reach out and we’ll set you up!

Introducing our New Landing Page

Our new landing page is now live at poly.app! We wanted to tell our story in a way that’s uniquely immersive, humane, and dare we say fun — drawing on our universal experience dealing with physical files and clutter in our everyday lives. Take a scroll through, we promise it’s worth your time.

If you’ve been keeping up with our weekly releases over the past few months, then you’ll recognize our affinity for the collage, to represent digital media in increasingly tactile ways. That was the inspiration behind this site, which involves an interactive “desktop” with a clutter of files that physically showcases the power of Poly, from helping you search for that perfect file from the bunch, or to rearrange stacks of images and documents into a meaningful view. It’s a step away from the sea of SAAS landing pages we see everywhere today, and hopefully it’ll inspire more creative early adopters like yourself to try us out!

This week some of you might’ve received a little thank you gift for your early support… And in it you might’ve noticed the tagline Preserve Human Knowledge, contained within various collages on the history of files, media, and human culture. We thought it’d be interesting to pause and look back on the lineage and timeline of human media… from cave paintings, to the printing press, to USB drives, to the files we have today. They contain the history of writing, art, and recorded media. Just like what’s present on your file browser now, and maybe just maybe, they can point us to where we’re going next.

Improvements

  • Added several secret features that we have yet to announce, but try to find them!
  • Added up-to-date terms of service and privacy policy language, which more explicitly describe your rights and protections with regards to your data.
  • Improved the agent’s ability to talk about events/topics outside its knowledge cutoff
  • Added navigation back/forward button on web. These are indistinguishable from the browser back/forward but many users still expressed confusion about how to navigate. Feedback on these and any changes always welcome!

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue with right clicking on the sidebar
  • Fixed an issue with downloading youtube links
  • Fixed an issue where uploads would display as “Uploading” even when complete
  • Fixed a deployment issue with our MCP server
  • Fixed an issue where the notes property would not display correctly
  • Fixed an issue whereby logging out would prevent you from being able to log in again in a certain configuration of events
  • Address landing page crashes on iPhone
  • Fixed an issue where the full page agent may go off the rails on occasion.

Join our Discord to share any bugs and requests, and give us your thoughts over coffee, virtually or in person.

Till next week!
