Migrate to Poly
Migrating to Poly is straightforward: since Poly is a cloud file system, you can either import directly from another storage provider (cloud-to-cloud, and therefore extremely fast), or you can simply drop a folder of files into the Poly app and they will be uploaded in the background. Poly preserves your folder structure and file metadata, and you can continue working while the import runs.
From local storage
The easiest way to import files from your computer is to drag them into Poly's file browser. You can drop entire folders, and Poly preserves your folder structure as it uploads. Metadata such as tags and colors are preserved, and Poly will index your files in the background.
Above, say, 1GB of data, the web app will not be able to handle the upload efficiently, and the data needs to get cached in your browser so you will see your data usage increase. Therefore, for large imports, use the desktop app rather than the web browser. The desktop app handles uploads more efficiently for large batches, and you can continue using the files as they upload.
The process is very straightforward:
- Open Poly on your desktop or at poly.app.
- In your operating system's file browser, navigate to the folder you want to import.
- Select the files or folders you want to move.
- Drag them into the Poly drive in Finder. Alternatively (less recommended), drag the files into the Poly app window. In the former case, the files are actually moved, while in the latter case the files are copied.
Poly uploads everything in the background. You can continue browsing while the import runs, and the progress is shown in the notifications pane in your desktop system tray.
From other cloud services
Seamless, cloud import of your files from other services is coming soon. For now, the best way to migrate from Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, or another service is to first download your files to your local machine, then upload them into Poly as described above.
After migrating
Once your files are in Poly, you can:
- Delete or reorganize the original source if you no longer need it
- Set up Shared Drives to give teammates access to specific folders
- Use the smart search bar to find files by similarity, content, or metadata.
Upgrade to Carbon
Migrating a whole library often means outgrowing the free plan's storage. Poly Carbon is the premium subscription: $10/month with 2 TB included, and past that you simply pay as you go at $0.01 per GB per month — there's no hard cap to hit mid-migration.

Overage is metered on your actual usage, rounded up to the nearest GB — storing 2.5 TB costs $10 + $5/month, and dropping back under 2 TB drops the overage with it.
To upgrade, open Settings → Storage and click Upgrade to 2TB; checkout and billing run through Stripe, and Manage subscription in the same place opens your billing portal.
