What does model/x-ase mean?
ASE means ASCII Scene Export in Autodesk 3ds Max. Autodesk describes it as an ASCII representation of a scene intended to be parsed by other programs. Export options can include mesh vertices and faces, materials, normals, mapping coordinates, vertex colors, cameras, lights, helpers, and animation keys.1
Those options make ASE useful as a readable interchange dump, but they also mean two ASE files can differ substantially. A file exported with only static mesh data is much simpler than one containing animated meshes and camera or light settings.
The associated extension is .ase. The media type identifies this format family; it does not convert bytes or guarantee that a reader supports every feature.

Opening and conversion
