What does model/obj represent?
The model/obj media type identifies wavefront obj files, normally stored as .obj. OBJ is a line-oriented Wavefront geometry format. v, vt, and vn records define positions, texture coordinates, and normals; f records define faces. Materials commonly live in a separate MTL file, and textures are separate resources.1
Compiled object code may also use .obj, but it is a different binary meaning and is not identified by model/obj.
Opening and converting the format
Blender and MeshLab can inspect or import this format. Export to GLB when you need a compact scene package. Choose 3MF for additive manufacturing metadata, or use a dedicated slicer for STL preparation.

Wavefront Technologies introduced OBJ with Advanced Visualizer in the early 1990s as a vendor-neutral exchange format. 1 Choose glTF or GLB for interactive scene delivery, 3MF for manufacturing packages, and use this format when its geometry or point-cloud representation fits the task.
