What kind of file is .ase?
ASE means ASCII Scene Export in Autodesk 3ds Max. Autodesk describes it as an ASCII representation of a scene intended to be parsed by other programs. Export options can include mesh vertices and faces, materials, normals, mapping coordinates, vertex colors, cameras, lights, helpers, and animation keys.1
Those options make ASE useful as a readable interchange dump, but they also mean two ASE files can differ substantially. A file exported with only static mesh data is much simpler than one containing animated meshes and camera or light settings.
How do I open a .ase file?
Autodesk 3ds Max is the natural first choice for 3ds Max ASCII Scene Export files. AC3D, Blender, and specialized viewers may import some related 3D formats, but compatibility depends on the format version and the constructs included. Export to glTF or OBJ only after checking whether materials, textures, animation, and scene relationships are needed.
Poly support for .ase
Poly recognizes .ase as 3D content and indexes filenames and visual similarity for processed geometry. Scene counts are displayed in the Details panel. Its interactive preview depends on successful decoding and on the constructs present. An optimized rendition of the 3D object or scene is provided to the agent, allowing compact yet information-rich multimodal interaction with 3D files.
| Construct | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Geometry and scene structure | Available when the file imports successfully. |
| Materials and textures | Depends on source constructs and supported rendition features. |
| Cameras, lights, and animation | Available when present and supported. |
Working with .ase
Keep the source file before converting. Format versions and optional scene features can change interoperability even when the suffix is unchanged.
