What does application/vnd.ms-powerpoint mean?
application/vnd.ms-powerpoint is the registered media type for Microsoft PowerPoint presentation graphics. The IANA registration deliberately describes PowerPoint generically, independent of version, subtype, or platform.1
In practice, the type is most closely associated with the PowerPoint 97-2003 binary family:

Microsoft lists all three as PowerPoint 97-2003 formats, and LibreOffice maps its corresponding import and export filters to application/vnd.ms-powerpoint.23 The extension changes the intended workflow, but the files belong to the same legacy binary format family.
.ppt file normally uses binary records in an OLE Compound File Binary container. A .pptx file is a ZIP-based Office Open XML package with the much longer media type application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation.Why is 1996 listed as the registration date?
Microsoft submitted the media type for registration in February 1996 and followed up with IANA on March 25, 1996. The registration names Microsoft PowerPoint, requires no parameters, and permits an optional name parameter.1
PowerPoint and its files predate the MIME label. Early PowerPoint releases used several evolving binary formats. PowerPoint 4.0 adopted the Compound File Binary container in 1994, and the stable format documented for PowerPoint 97 through 2003 emerged in 1997.4
Microsoft published the binary specification under its Open Specification Promise in 2007 and continues to maintain the [MS-PPT] documentation. That specification describes slides, shapes, pictures, audio, video, text, transitions, animations, and other presentation content as records and structures.5
How can you identify a PPT file?
PowerPoint 97-2003 files commonly begin with the eight-byte Compound File Binary signature:

Those bytes identify the container, not PowerPoint specifically. Legacy Word and Excel documents, MSI packages, and other OLE compound files can start the same way. A PPT file also has PowerPoint-specific directory entries, including PowerPoint Document and Current User streams.46
This page therefore does not list the shared CFB header as a definitive magic number. Reliable identification combines the filename, declared media type, compound-file directory, and PowerPoint records. Renaming another compound file to .ppt does not convert it into a presentation.
How do you open an application/vnd.ms-powerpoint file?
General-purpose browsers do not decode PPT records themselves. Use a presentation application or a web service:
- Microsoft PowerPoint opens the PowerPoint 97-2003 presentation, show, and template formats.2
- LibreOffice Impress opens
.pptand.ppsfiles and provides PowerPoint 97-2003 filters.37 - PowerPoint for the web can display
.pptand.ppsfiles. Editing creates a newer.pptxor.ppsxcopy rather than saving back to the binary format.8
Support in Poly
Poly recognizes application/vnd.ms-powerpoint and .ppt filenames as presentations. When processing succeeds, you can:
- Browse the deck with a first-slide thumbnail and a connected presentation preview.
- Search slide text and find visually related rendered slides.
- Ask the Poly agent about readable slide text and images.
The preview requires a connection. The agent works from the readable slide content, so it does not play animations, transitions, macros, or embedded audio and video. Password-protected, damaged, or incompatible presentations may not produce a preview or content index.
Poly does not currently infer .pps or .pot from filenames. Supply the correct media type when importing those extensions if you want Poly to treat them as legacy PowerPoint files.
Should you convert PPT to PPTX or PDF?
Choose the destination based on what the recipient needs:

PowerPoint uses .pptx as its current default and retains .ppt as an older compatibility format.9 Conversion creates a new representation. Merely renaming deck.ppt to deck.pptx leaves the binary contents unchanged.
For long-term access, keep the original PPT together with a reviewed PDF and, when continued editing matters, a modern presentation copy. This preserves the source while providing simpler fallbacks for future software.
Security and privacy considerations
Treat an unexpected PPT attachment as active-capable content. Legacy PowerPoint files can contain macros, linked or embedded OLE objects, external references, and malformed records that exercise complex application code. Microsoft blocks many Office macros received from the internet by default and recommends maintaining that protection unless the source is trusted.10
Slides can also retain speaker notes, author and company properties, comments, hidden slides, linked files, and embedded media that are not obvious during an ordinary presentation. Inspect the full deck and its properties before publishing sensitive material.
Conversion is not proof that the original is safe. Use maintained software, keep protective settings enabled, and avoid running macros or opening linked content from an untrusted deck.

PPTX is usually the more practical editable format for a new presentation. Keep PPT when a legacy workflow requires it or when preserving the original file matters.
