What kind of file is a .pptx?
A .pptx file is an editable Microsoft PowerPoint presentation stored in the Office Open XML format. It normally uses the application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation MIME type. A deck can contain slides, text, images, charts, speaker notes, animations, and media.
PPTX is a ZIP package rather than one large XML file. PresentationML describes the slide structure, DrawingML represents graphics, and separate package parts hold slides, layouts, themes, media, and relationships.1 Its first four bytes are commonly 50 4B 03 04, the same signature as an ordinary ZIP file and other Open XML formats. Reliable identification therefore checks internal parts such as [Content_Types].xml and ppt/presentation.xml, not just the suffix or leading bytes.2
deck.zip, deck.ppt, or deck.pptm to deck.pptx does not convert it. Presentation software must read the source and save a valid PPTX package. How do I open a .pptx on my computer?
- On Windows and macOS, Microsoft PowerPoint provides the most complete editing and playback support.
- In a web browser, PowerPoint for the web can view and edit PPTX presentations.3
- On macOS, iPhone, and iPad, Apple Keynote can open and edit PowerPoint presentations.4
- On Windows, macOS, and Linux, LibreOffice Impress can open and save PPTX files.5
Check a deck in the app and on the device you will use to present it. Missing fonts, substituted media codecs, transitions, animations, embedded objects, and app-specific effects can change its appearance or behavior.
Poly support for .pptx
Poly gives PPTX presentations thumbnails, a connected in-app preview, searchable slide text, OCR when needed, and page-level visual and semantic search. Successfully processed slide content is also available to the Poly agent.
Preview requires a network connection. Password-protected, damaged, or unsupported presentations may not produce a rich preview or content index. Poly presents readable slide content without running macros or external data connections.
History of .pptx
Microsoft made PPTX the default presentation format in PowerPoint 2007, replacing the older binary .ppt default.6 The underlying Office Open XML family became ECMA-376 in December 2006 and later ISO/IEC 29500.7
The final x reflects the XML-based format family. It also distinguishes a macro-free presentation from .pptm, the related macro-enabled format. The same .pptx suffix can represent Strict or Transitional Open XML conformance, so the filename alone does not reveal which class a package uses.2
Working with .pptx and alternatives
Choose the output based on what the recipient needs:
| Format | Best for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
.pptx | Continued editing and presenting in current office apps | Rendering can vary with fonts and app support |
| Stable review, printing, and distribution | Animations, notes, and editable slide structure are lost | |
| ODP | OpenDocument editing workflows | PowerPoint-specific effects may change |
.ppt | Older PowerPoint compatibility | Legacy format has fewer modern features |
For an editable handoff, keep the PPTX and provide the fonts or replace them with common alternatives. For a visual reference, export a PDF alongside it. Keep the original until you have checked the converted slides, notes, charts, and media.
