What kind of file is a `.pps`?

A .pps file is a Microsoft PowerPoint Show saved in the PowerPoint 97-2003 binary format. It normally uses the application/vnd.ms-powerpoint MIME type. Unlike a .ppt presentation, a PPS is intended to open directly in slide-show view. The slides remain editable when opened inside a compatible presentation application.¹

Legacy PowerPoint files commonly use an OLE Compound File Binary container. Its first eight bytes are usually D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, but that signature is shared with old Word, Excel, and other compound files. Reliable identification also checks for PowerPoint-specific structures rather than trusting the suffix or header alone.²³

Renaming slides.ppt to slides.pps may change how compatible software opens the same legacy presentation. It does not convert the file to a newer format, and renaming an unrelated file to .pps does not make it a PowerPoint Show.

How do I open a `.pps` on my computer?

On Windows or macOS, use Microsoft PowerPoint. Start PowerPoint first and choose Open if you want to inspect or edit the slides instead of immediately presenting them.
On Linux, LibreOffice Impress can open PowerPoint .pps files.⁴
In a web browser, PowerPoint for the web can display a PPS stored online. Editing converts it to the newer .ppsx format rather than saving changes back to PPS.⁵

Keep a copy before conversion and review the result. Fonts, animations, transitions, embedded media, and OLE objects can behave differently outside the software that created the show.

Poly support for `.pps`

Poly stores, syncs, shares, versions, downloads, and finds .pps files by name. Poly does not currently infer the PowerPoint media type from this suffix alone, so a PPS uploaded without accurate type information receives storage-only handling.

When a trusted file is supplied as application/vnd.ms-powerpoint and processing succeeds, Poly can provide a connected presentation preview, index readable slide text and rendered slides, and make that content available to the Poly agent. Animations, transitions, macros, and embedded media are not played for agent reading.

Treat an unexpected PPS as active-capable Office content. It may contain macros, linked objects, or external references. Use maintained software, keep Office security protections enabled, and do not enable content from an untrusted sender.⁶

History of `.pps`

Microsoft identifies .pps as its PowerPoint 97-2003 Show format, alongside .ppt presentations and .pot templates.¹ The underlying binary format dates to the era when PowerPoint used compound files rather than ZIP packages. Microsoft later documented that binary format publicly as [MS-PPT].³

PowerPoint 2007 introduced Office Open XML successors. A show without macros now normally uses .ppsx, while a macro-enabled show uses .ppsm. The old .pps remains useful for exchanging presentations with legacy systems.

For ongoing work, open the PPS in a compatible presentation app and save a reviewed .ppsx or .pptx copy. Use PDF when recipients only need a stable visual copy. Keep the original when exact legacy behavior matters, and inspect hidden slides, speaker notes, document properties, and embedded objects before sharing.
