What does model/x-amf represent?

The model/x-amf media type is Poly's de facto mapping for Additive Manufacturing Format files, normally stored as .amf. AMF is an XML-based additive-manufacturing format. It can describe objects, materials, colors, lattices, and curved triangles, allowing more manufacturing information than a plain STL surface. The file may be compressed for distribution. IANA's current standards registry does not list model/amf or model/x-amf, so applications may use a different local label.12

Opening and converting the format

Cura and MeshLab are useful applications for opening or importing this format. Export to GLB for compact interactive delivery, or choose 3MF for additive manufacturing when its package model fits the workflow.

Support in Poly

Poly previews supported geometry, makes filenames searchable, and provides visual similarity for supported 3D content. Available mesh and scene metadata can appear in details. An optimized rendition of the 3D object or scene is provided to the agent, allowing compact yet information-rich multimodal interaction with 3D files.

ConstructHandling
GeometryObjects, volumes, triangles, and curved-triangle data
MaterialsMaterial and color assignments may be represented
ManufacturingLattice and metadata constructs may be present
Poly limitationOptional AMF constructs may not all appear in the preview

Poly supports inspection and multimodal understanding; editing, simulation, and exact authoring remain application tasks.

Format context and alternatives

ASTM published AMF as an additive-manufacturing format intended to extend the information carried by STL. 3MF is a related modern choice when a broader manufacturing package and ecosystem are required. 1 Choose glTF or GLB for interactive scene delivery, OBJ for simple mesh exchange, and 3MF for manufacturing packages when its optional metadata matches the workflow.
