What does model/step mean?
STEP is the common name for ISO 10303, a family of standards for product data representation and exchange. ISO describes its architecture, integrated resources, application protocols, and implementation methods.1 The suffixes .step and .stp are used by CAD applications, but interoperability depends on the application protocol and entities supported by the receiving application.
The associated extensions are .step, .stp. The media type identifies the format family; it does not convert bytes or guarantee that a reader supports every entity.
Poly support
Poly can recognize this type as 3D content for IFC-compatible workflows. Filenames are indexed, while visual similarity, scene counts, preview, and agent access apply only when the IFC-compatible content is processed successfully. An optimized rendition of the 3D object or scene is provided to the agent for that supported content, allowing compact yet information-rich multimodal interaction with 3D files.

The current support path is oriented toward IFC content; general CAD AP203 or AP214 solids are outside this promise.
Opening and conversion
Use a format-aware application when preserving editability matters. Conversion to glTF or OBJ can improve interchange for 3D viewing, while CAD and BIM workflows should retain the original schema and exchange context.
