What does image/x-pentax-pef mean?

image/x-pentax-pef identifies a Pentax Electronic File, the proprietary raw-photo format used by Pentax cameras. Its usual extension is .pef. A PEF preserves sensor measurements and capture metadata so a raw processor can choose the demosaicing, white balance, exposure, color rendering, noise reduction, and sharpening used for the finished picture. Ricoh describes PEF as Pentax's original raw format and offers it alongside DNG on current supported cameras.¹

The media type is a conventional identifier, not an IANA registration. It is absent from IANA's current image registry, while libopenraw documents image/x-pentax-pef for files made by Ricoh and Pentax cameras.²³ The x- prefix reflects that unregistered status.

How to identify a PEF file

PEF uses a TIFF-derived structure to organize raw image data, previews, and metadata.⁴ This means a PEF can begin like a little-endian or big-endian TIFF, commonly with one of these byte sequences:

Those bytes are not a PEF-specific magic number. TIFF, DNG, and several other camera-raw formats can have the same header. Reliable identification also checks the .pef extension, TIFF directories, camera make and model, and Pentax-specific metadata.

A PEF can contain one or more rendered JPEG images in addition to the raw sensor payload. Pentax's own software has offered full-size JPEG extraction from PEF files.⁵ A file browser can use such an image for a quick preview, while a raw processor interprets the sensor data to make a new rendering. The two may differ in crop, brightness, white balance, color, noise reduction, and sharpening.

Renaming a TIFF, JPEG, or DNG file to .pef does not convert it. The bytes and camera-specific structure must match the format.

When did Pentax introduce PEF?

PEF dates to Pentax's first digital SLR, the *ist D, which launched in 2003. Pentax's software for that camera identifies its CCD raw files with the .pef extension, and the company's 2003 press archive records the *ist D launch.⁶⁷

Pentax later added a choice between PEF and Adobe's DNG. The K-7 manual, for example, labels PEF as the Pentax original raw format and DNG as a publicly available format designed by Adobe.⁸ PEF remains in active use: the current Pentax KF records raw photos as either PEF or DNG, and Adobe's current compatibility list includes PEF from the KF, K-3 Mark III, K-1 series, KP, and many older bodies.¹⁹

How to open a .pef file

Use a raw editor that supports the camera model:

• Pentax Digital Camera Utility is Ricoh's first-party application for browsing and developing supported Pentax raw files. Ricoh continues to publish updates for current Pentax models.¹⁰
• Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, and Lightroom support PEF files from many Pentax cameras. Adobe's table states the minimum Camera Raw and Lightroom version for each body.⁹
• Apple Photos and Preview-based workflows can use the operating system's raw decoder for Pentax cameras listed by Apple.¹¹

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari do not natively develop PEF files as web images. PEF is absent from MDN's list of browser image formats.¹² For a website or message, export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG derivative and keep the PEF as the editable original.

The preview is intended for browsing and visual understanding. Use a compatible raw editor when you need to develop the sensor data, recover highlights, change white balance, or apply camera-specific corrections. Preview detail and appearance depend on the usable rendered image stored in the file. Words photographed inside a PEF are not searchable as text.

Converting PEF to DNG, TIFF, or JPEG

Choose a destination based on what you need next:

Pentax software can convert supported PEF files to DNG, and Pentax's raw-development workflow can create JPEG or TIFF images.⁵⁸ These are different operations. PEF-to-DNG conversion keeps a raw-oriented workflow but changes the container. Exporting JPEG, TIFF, or PNG develops the sensor samples into pixels using selected processing settings.

Keep the untouched PEF after either kind of conversion. A rendered derivative cannot recover the original sensor measurements, and a converted raw file may not preserve every Pentax-specific field.

Metadata and privacy

A PEF can carry detailed Exif and manufacturer metadata. Exif fields can include capture time, location, camera and lens names, owner or photographer information, serial identifiers, and processing software.¹³

Review metadata before sharing an original raw file. Export settings can preserve more information than expected, so inspect the derivative as well as the source. A fresh JPEG intended for publication is usually easier to audit than a PEF containing raw data, previews, and proprietary tags.

Is PEF the same as DNG or JPEG?

No. All three can come from the same capture, but they serve different purposes.

A camera may be able to record PEF and JPEG together, or let you choose PEF or DNG for the raw file.¹ An embedded JPEG inside a PEF is only one component of the raw file. Extracting it gives you the camera's rendering, not a full development of the sensor data.
