What kind of file is a .pef?

A .pef file is a Pentax Electronic File, the camera maker's original RAW-photo format. It preserves sensor measurements and capture metadata so a RAW processor can choose white balance, exposure, color, noise reduction, and sharpening when rendering the picture. Current supported Pentax cameras may offer PEF alongside DNG.1

The conventional image/x-pentax-pef MIME type is not registered by IANA.2 PEF has a TIFF-based structure and can begin with 49 49 2A 00 or 4D 4D 00 2A, the ordinary little-endian or big-endian TIFF header. Those bytes are not unique to PEF. Reliable identification also checks TIFF directories, camera make and model, and Pentax-specific metadata.3

Renaming a TIFF, JPEG, DNG, or another RAW file to .pef does not convert it. The suffix alone cannot prove that the contents are a valid Pentax RAW photo.

How do I open a .pef on my computer?

Use software that supports the Pentax camera model that created the file:

  • Windows or macOS: Pentax Digital Camera Utility browses and develops supported PEF photographs.4
  • Windows or macOS: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Camera Raw support many Pentax models. Adobe lists the minimum compatible version for each camera.5
  • macOS, iOS, and iPadOS: Apple provides system RAW support for listed Pentax cameras, which compatible apps can use.6
  • Linux: RAW editors such as darktable or RawTherapee may open PEF files, with support varying by camera model.

Web browsers do not natively develop PEF photographs. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website or message.

If one PEF opens and another does not, compare their camera models and update the RAW editor before assuming the second file is damaged.

Poly support for .pef

Poly gives PEF photographs thumbnails, an in-app image preview, available camera metadata, visual search, and agent understanding. You can find a capture by filename, camera details, color, or visible content, and the Poly agent can reason about the displayed photograph.

The preview uses a camera-rendered image stored in the file rather than newly developing the raw sensor measurements. Use a dedicated RAW editor for adjustments such as highlight recovery and white balance. Words photographed inside an ordinary PEF are not indexed as document text. Review location, camera, lens, owner, and serial metadata before sharing an original.

History of .pef

PEF appeared with Pentax's first digital SLR, the *ist D, in 2003. Pentax software for that camera identifies .pef as the extension for its CCD RAW files.7

Pentax later added DNG as an alternative RAW format. PEF remains in use: the Pentax KF can record PEF, DNG, or a RAW file together with JPEG.1 The format varies by camera model, so a decoder that supports an older PEF may need an update for a newer body.

Working with .pef and alternatives

Keep the original PEF as the master, then export a derivative suited to its destination:

Pentax software can convert supported PEF files to DNG or develop them into JPEG and TIFF images.48 Keep the untouched PEF after conversion because a rendered derivative cannot recreate the original sensor measurements.
