What is the image/jxl MIME type?

The image/jxl media type identifies a JPEG XL image. JPEG XL is the JPEG committee's ISO/IEC 18181 image-coding system for photographs, graphics, and mixed imagery. It supports lossy and lossless coding, high bit depths, wide color gamuts, HDR, alpha transparency, progressive decoding, and multiple frames.1

A .jxl file can begin in either of two ways:2

The boxed form can carry metadata such as EXIF and JUMBF, plus data needed to reconstruct a legacy JPEG. Both representations use the .jxl extension and image/jxl; they are not separate MIME types. The IANA registration defines no required or optional media-type parameters and lists no deprecated aliases.2

An extension or Content-Type header is only a hint. Check the signature and parse the full structure before trusting a file. Renaming photo.jpg to photo.jxl does not convert it.

How JPEG XL became a standard

The JPEG committee issued its final call for proposals for a next-generation image-coding standard in April 2018, then advanced JPEG XL to Committee Draft in 2019.3 The first edition of the file-format standard, ISO/IEC 18181-2, was published in 2021. The standard has since received revised editions, while conformance tests and the reference software are specified in their own parts.4

The format was designed for both web image delivery and professional photography. It also addressed migration from the enormous installed base of JPEG files. A JPEG can be losslessly recompressed into JPEG XL while retaining reconstruction data, then restored to the exact original JPEG bytes later.12

That reversible path is different from ordinary conversion. Decoding a JPEG and encoding its pixels as another lossy image creates a new generation and cannot recover the original JPEG bitstream. JPEG XL's reconstruction mode preserves that bitstream intentionally.

How to open a JPEG XL file

Browser support is improving, but it is not yet universal:

  • Safari has displayed JPEG XL since Safari 17 on supported Apple operating systems.5
  • Firefox 153 offers JPEG XL as an experimental Firefox Labs feature rather than enabling it for everyone by default.6
  • Chrome introduced a JPEG XL decoder in Chrome 145 as an origin trial, gated behind runtime and build flags. It is not general default support.7

For editing, GIMP 3 imports and exports JPEG XL with its libjxl-based plug-in.8 Current Photoshop releases also list JPEG XL among supported high-bit-depth formats.9 ImageMagick can read and write JXL when its JPEG XL delegate library is installed.10

For a public website, provide a fallback rather than sending only .jxl. A <picture> element can list an image/jxl source first and use JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG in the <img> fallback.5

Support in Poly

Poly has a dedicated JPEG XL processing path. It recognizes both image/jxl and the .jxl extension, then uses jxl-oxide to decode frame zero. Integration tests process two JXL fixtures, verify their dimensions, generate thumbnails, and create visual embeddings.

In practice, Poly:

  • Generates WebP thumbnails from the first decoded frame.
  • Opens the file in its image-preview flow, using a rendered derivative when the browser cannot display the original.
  • Stores image dimensions and makes the filename searchable.
  • Builds a visual embedding from a generated thumbnail for similarity search.
  • Gives the agent a rendered WebP thumbnail so it can interpret the visible image.

There are important limits. The decoder deliberately renders only the first frame, so animated JPEG XL is static in Poly. It converts decoded samples to 8-bit grayscale, RGB, or RGBA pixels before downstream processing, so the preview does not preserve the original high bit depth or HDR range. Plain images are not OCR'd, so lettering inside the picture is not indexed as text. Poly also does not expose JPEG reconstruction data or the file's box structure for inspection.

JPEG XL compared with ordinary JPEG

JPEG XL is not merely a new extension for a JPEG file. The formats use incompatible codestreams and different decoders.

The JPEG XL benchmark published during standardization evaluated both subjective and objective image quality and found substantial savings against JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The same work evaluated reversible recompression of existing JPEGs.11 Those results describe the tested encoder, images, and quality methods, not a guaranteed ratio for every file. Photographic noise, synthetic edges, encoder effort, and target quality all affect the outcome.

Converting JPEG XL safely

Choose the destination based on how the image will be used:

  • Convert to image/jpeg for the widest compatibility when transparency, animation, and lossless pixels are not required.
  • Convert to PNG for lossless 8-bit or 16-bit interchange and alpha transparency.
  • Convert to AVIF for modern web delivery where its browser support fits your audience.
  • Keep the .jxl original when it contains HDR, high-bit-depth, animation, or JPEG reconstruction data that the destination cannot retain.

GIMP and ImageMagick can perform ordinary pixel conversion. The JPEG XL reference tools are the better choice when you specifically need reversible JPEG recompression, because a generic editor may decode the pixels and discard the reconstruction data.110

Converting a high-bit-depth or HDR JPEG XL to an 8-bit JPEG can clip highlights, reduce color precision, and remove transparency. Exporting only the first frame also discards animation. Inspect the source before choosing conversion settings.

Security and privacy considerations

JPEG XL files can contain very large images, multiple frames, many components, metadata, and user-defined boxes. IANA warns that a small compressed file can expand into a large decoded object or require substantial computation, creating denial-of-service risks for an unbounded decoder.2

Metadata can also reveal the image's source or other private details. Preserve it when provenance matters, but remove or review it before publishing sensitive material. Use maintained decoders, impose pixel and resource limits, and do not treat successful signature detection as complete validation.
