What kind of file is a .jxl?
A .jxl file is a JPEG XL image. It normally uses the image/jxl MIME type. JPEG XL supports lossy and lossless compression, HDR, wide color gamuts, high bit depths, alpha transparency, progressive decoding, and multiple frames.1
The file has one of two signatures: FF 0A for a direct codestream, or 00 00 00 0C 4A 58 4C 20 0D 0A 87 0A for a boxed file. The boxed form can also carry EXIF, JUMBF, and data for reconstructing an original JPEG.2

JPEG XL support is useful but not universal:
- On macOS and iOS, Safari 17 and later can display JPEG XL on supported operating-system versions.3
- On Windows, macOS, and Linux, GIMP 3 can import and export JPEG XL.4
- For command-line conversion, ImageMagick reads and writes JXL when its JPEG XL delegate is installed.5
- For professional editing, current Adobe Photoshop versions list JPEG XL among their supported high-bit-depth document formats.6
Do not assume every browser, gallery app, or recipient can open the file. For a public website, offer a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF fallback.
Poly support for .jxl
Poly recognizes JXL images, creates thumbnails, opens a rendered preview, records basic image properties, and makes the visible picture available to visual search and the Poly agent.
The preview and agent view use the first rendered frame and do not preserve animation, original HDR range, or high-bit-depth precision. Text drawn into an ordinary JXL image is not indexed as document text. Keep the original file when those features or embedded metadata matter.
History of .jxl
The JPEG committee issued a call for proposals for its next-generation JPEG XL standard in 2018. The first edition of the ISO/IEC 18181-2 file-format specification followed in 2021.7 The .jxl suffix and image/jxl media type identify both the direct-codestream and boxed representations.2
JPEG XL was designed for web delivery and professional photography, but also for migration from ordinary JPEG. Its distinctive reconstruction mode can losslessly recompress an existing JPEG and later restore the exact original JPEG bytes.1
Working with .jxl and alternatives
Choose a format based on what must survive the handoff:

JPEG XL has no guaranteed compression ratio. The JPEG committee describes a typical 20:1 to 50:1 range, but the result depends on the source, quality target, encoder effort, and whether the file is lossless.1 Compare decoded results from the same source rather than comparing quality-setting numbers.
Keep the .jxl original before conversion. Exporting to an 8-bit JPEG can discard HDR, transparency, animation, metadata, and reconstruction data. Generic image editors usually perform pixel conversion; use JPEG XL tools designed for reversible JPEG recompression when exact recovery of an original JPEG matters.
