What kind of file is a .tiff?

A .tiff file is usually a Tagged Image File Format raster image. It uses the image/tiff MIME type, just like the shorter .tif suffix. TIFF is a flexible container whose image file directories, or IFDs, describe pixels, dimensions, color, compression, resolution, and metadata. Multiple IFDs can hold pages or related images in one file.1

TIFF does not imply lossless pixels. A file can be uncompressed, use lossless LZW, ZIP, or PackBits compression, or contain lossy JPEG-compressed image data. Private tags, unusual color spaces, application layers, and specialized profiles also mean that two valid TIFFs may not work in exactly the same software.

Classic TIFF declares its byte order in one of two four-byte headers:

The next four bytes point to the first IFD.1 These signatures are useful clues, but a safe decoder must still validate directory offsets, dimensions, field lengths, and compression.

Renaming a JPEG, PNG, .tif, or camera RAW file to .tiff does not convert its contents. Renaming a valid .tif to .tiff normally changes only the filename.

How do I open a .tiff on my computer?

  • On Windows, open it in a TIFF-capable viewer or editor such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. Microsoft Access also renders TIFF and TIF image attachments natively.2
  • On macOS, Preview opens TIFF images and can export them to other image formats.3
  • On Linux, GIMP and ImageMagick are common choices.

Desktop support is broad, but a particular application may reject an unfamiliar compression scheme, high bit depth, BigTIFF file, private tag, or specialized profile. Browser display is less dependable than desktop support, so provide a PNG, JPEG, or PDF copy when the recipient needs easy web viewing.

Poly support for .tiff

Multipage TIFFs do not receive a document-style page viewer. Words visible inside an ordinary .tiff are not indexed as document text. Keep the original when additional pages, layers, specialized tags, or exact source pixels matter.

History of .tiff

Aldus published the first TIFF specification in 1986 after consulting scanner makers and software developers. Revision 6.0 followed on June 3, 1992 and remains the basis of the registered format.1

The four-letter .tiff spelling reflects the TIFF acronym directly. Its .tif counterpart suited legacy DOS-style 8.3 filenames, which limited extensions to three characters.4 IANA's image/tiff registration lists .tif, while .tiff is also widely recognized by current software.5 The two suffixes do not represent different image formats.

The Library of Congress reports broad use of TIFF for digitization and preservation masters, but a .tiff suffix alone does not make a file archival.6 For long-term storage, select a documented profile, lossless compression, an embedded color profile, and useful descriptive metadata. Test the result in the intended receiving software before discarding any source file.
