What kind of file is a .tif?
A .tif file is usually a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) raster image. It uses the image/tiff MIME type and contains image file directories, or IFDs, that describe the pixels, dimensions, color, compression, and metadata. A TIFF can hold more than one image, which is useful for multipage scans.1
The extension does not promise one particular encoding. TIFF can contain uncompressed pixels, lossless LZW, ZIP, or PackBits data, and even lossy JPEG-compressed image data. It can also carry private tags or application-specific layers that another TIFF reader may ignore.
Classic TIFF has one of two common four-byte signatures:

The header identifies byte order and the number 42, followed by an offset to the first IFD.1
.tif does not convert its contents. Several RAW formats are TIFF-based, so reliable software also validates directories, tags, offsets, and supported compression.How do I open a .tif on my computer?
- On Windows, use a TIFF-capable image viewer or editor such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. Current Microsoft 365 applications can also insert
.tifand.tiffraster images.2 - On macOS, Preview opens TIFF images and can export them to several other formats.3
- On Linux, GIMP and ImageMagick are common choices.
Desktop support is broad, but individual TIFFs can still fail because the format permits many compression methods, color spaces, bit depths, private tags, and profiles. Web support is much less dependable, so convert a delivery copy when the recipient needs to view the image directly in a browser.
Poly support for .tif
Poly gives .tif images thumbnails, an in-app image preview, supported TIFF/Exif metadata, visual search, and agent understanding. You can find an image by its filename or visual content, and the Poly agent can reason about the rendered image.
Multipage TIFFs do not receive a document-style page viewer. Words visible inside an ordinary .tif are not indexed as document text. Keep the original when extra pages, layers, specialized tags, or exact pixel data matter.
History of .tif
Aldus published the first TIFF specification in 1986 after working with scanner makers and software developers. Revision 6.0, still the foundation of the registered format, followed on June 3, 1992.1 IANA registers .tif for image/tiff; .tiff is a widely used spelling for the same format.4
The compact .tif suffix also fit older DOS-style 8.3 filenames, which allowed at most three characters after the period.5 Modern systems can use either spelling. Changing between .tif and .tiff normally changes only the filename.
Working with .tif and alternatives
Choose the destination by what needs to survive:

The Library of Congress reports extensive use of TIFF for digitization and preservation masters, but that does not make every .tif automatically archival.6 For long-term use, choose a documented profile, lossless compression, an embedded color profile, and metadata that future readers need. Test the file in the receiving application before deleting the source.
