Poly supportPartial. Poly recognizes valid SMD model or animation data when supported.
Indexed by PolyYes. Poly indexes the filename and available scene metadata.
Preview in PolyPartial. A preview is possible for SMD geometry, while animation-only SMD needs a compatible mesh.
Poly agentPartial. An optimized rendition is available when SMD contributes to a compatible scene; animation-only files are not standalone objects.

What kind of file is a .smd?

SMD is a plain-text interchange format used by Valve's Source toolchain. A file can describe nodes and skeletons, triangle geometry with material names, or animation frames. The particular section set determines whether it contains a mesh, an animation, or both.1

How do I open a .smd?

Use Blender with an SMD importer or Crowbar. Keep referenced material and texture files nearby, then check bone names, coordinate axes, material paths, and animation timing after import.

Poly support for .smd

Poly recognizes .smd as model/x-smd and indexes its filename and available scene metadata. Geometry SMD files may receive a preview; animation-only files need compatible scene geometry. The agent receives an optimized rendition when a rendered scene is available.

Working with .smd files

Export a copy to glTF or GLB for modern scene exchange. Preserve the original because Source-specific bones, material paths, and animation bindings may not survive conversion.1
