What kind of file is a .q3o?

A .q3o file is a Quick3D object file. Its binary structure includes mesh data, with optional materials and textures. The identifying signature is quick3Do.1

The related .q3s suffix describes a Quick3D scene. When recovering an old asset, retain both if they were supplied together. An object's shape and its presentation in a scene are different things.

The 3D format's Poly identifier is model/x-q3o.

Opening the file

Quick3D is the originating legacy application. If it is unavailable, use a viewer that explicitly lists Q3O support. General-purpose modelling tools do not necessarily include a Quick3D importer; verify support before relying on a conversion workflow.

Poly support

Poly previews supported Quick3D mesh geometry. Materials and lighting can look different from the legacy application, and the original file remains the source for any format-specific authoring details.

For a supported model, orbit, pan, and zoom let you inspect its shape. Search by filename, or by visual similarity when visual content is available. Available geometry and scene counts appear in 3D Details.

Background and alternatives

The documented Quick3D 3.0 layout distinguishes object files from scene files by their signatures and records.1 Do not confuse Quick3D with Apple's QuickDraw 3D; similar names do not establish format compatibility.

Export to OBJ for simple mesh exchange or glTF for a modern scene workflow. Compare orientation, scale, and appearance after conversion, and retain the original asset.
