What kind of file is a .ori?

A .ori file is a camera RAW photograph made by certain Olympus and OM System High Res Shot modes. The camera moves its sensor between several exposures and combines them into a higher-resolution result. When RAW+JPEG is selected, it can also save one pre-combination RAW exposure as .ori.1 That makes ORI useful when you want access to an individual source exposure rather than only the composite.

ORI belongs to the same camera-RAW family as .orf and commonly uses the unregistered image/x-olympus-orf MIME type. ORF-family files use a TIFF/EP-derived structure and can begin with 4D 4D 4F 52 (MMOR), 49 49 52 4F (IIRO), or 49 49 52 53 (IIRS).2 Software should still validate directories, offsets, camera metadata, and image dimensions instead of trusting the suffix alone.

An .ori is not simply an .orf with a different name. Its pre-combination role depends on the camera and capture mode. Renaming either extension does not convert the file or create a High Res Shot.

How do I open a .ori on my computer?

Use a RAW editor that supports the exact camera model:

  • Windows or macOS: OM Workspace is the first-party choice. Current OM System documentation says pre-combination ORI images can be played back with its latest version.1
  • Windows or macOS: Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, and Photoshop support ORI from listed Olympus and OM System cameras. Adobe publishes the minimum compatible version for each model.3
  • Linux: darktable, RawTherapee, or another RAW editor may work, but confirm support for the camera and capture mode.

Web browsers do not natively develop ORI sensor data. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website, message, or presentation.

If an ORI will not open, update the RAW editor and check its camera compatibility list before assuming the file is damaged.

Poly support for .ori

Poly gives recognized ORI photos thumbnails, an in-app image preview, available camera metadata, visual search, and agent understanding. You can find a capture by filename, camera details, color, or visible content, and the Poly agent can reason about the displayed photograph.

The preview represents a camera-rendered image stored in the RAW file. Poly does not develop its sensor mosaic, so use a dedicated RAW editor for exposure recovery, demosaicing, lens correction, and precise color. Words photographed in an ordinary ORI are not indexed as document text. Review location, time, camera, lens, owner, and photographer metadata before sharing an original.

History of .ori

Olympus introduced the ORI naming convention for the source RAW saved by High Res Shot workflows. The PEN-F manual describes a mode that records several sensor-shifted exposures, saves one pre-combination .ori when RAW+JPEG is selected, and then builds the high-resolution image.4

The convention continues under OM System. Its current OM-1 Mark II documentation describes tripod and handheld High Res Shot modes with composite RAW sizes of 80 megapixels (10368 × 7776) and 50 megapixels (8160 × 6120), respectively, while retaining .ori for the separately saved pre-combination exposure.1 Those dimensions describe the composite output, not the single ORI source exposure.

Working with .ori and alternatives

Keep the original ORI if the individual exposure matters, then export a derivative for the next stage:

Exporting an ORI to TIFF or JPEG renders the sensor data using choices such as white balance, tone, and sharpening. It does not preserve every original measurement. Keep the untouched ORI alongside important derivatives.
