What kind of file is a .orf?

A .orf file is an Olympus Raw Format photograph. Olympus cameras and newer OM System cameras use it to preserve sensor measurements and capture settings for development after the shot. Compared with a camera-finished JPEG, the RAW file gives an editor more room to adjust white balance, exposure, tone, color, noise reduction, and sharpening.1

The conventional image/x-olympus-orf MIME type is not registered by IANA.2 ORF uses a TIFF/EP-derived directory structure, but its opening identifier differs from an ordinary TIFF. Depending on the generation and byte order, a file can begin with 4D 4D 4F 52 (MMOR), 49 49 52 4F (IIRO), or 49 49 52 53 (IIRS).3

Renaming a JPEG, TIFF, DNG, or another RAW file to .orf does not convert it. Software should validate the signature, directory structure, camera metadata, and offsets rather than trusting the suffix alone.

How do I open a .orf on my computer?

Use software that supports the exact camera model:

  • Windows or macOS: OM Workspace is the first-party application for viewing, editing, and converting supported ORF photos.4
  • Windows or macOS: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Camera Raw support Olympus and OM System models individually. Adobe lists the minimum compatible version for each camera.5
  • macOS, iOS, and iPadOS: Apple provides system RAW support for listed camera models, which compatible apps such as Photos can use.6
  • Linux: RAW editors such as darktable or RawTherapee may open ORF photos, with support varying by camera model.

Web browsers do not natively develop ORF sensor data. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website or message.

If an older editor rejects a file from a newer camera, update its RAW support before assuming the photo is damaged. The .orf suffix covers multiple camera generations.

Poly support for .orf

Poly gives ORF photos thumbnails, an in-app image preview, available camera metadata, visual search, and agent understanding. You can find a capture by filename, camera details, color, or visible content, and the Poly agent can reason about the displayed photograph.

The preview represents a camera-rendered image stored with the RAW capture rather than a new development of its sensor mosaic. Use a dedicated RAW editor for adjustments such as highlight recovery, demosaicing, lens correction, and precise color. Words photographed inside an ordinary ORF are not indexed as document text. Review time, location, camera, lens, owner, and photographer metadata before sharing an original.

History of .orf

ORF dates to Olympus's early professional digital-camera era. The CAMEDIA E-10, announced in 2000, offered RAW recording, and its files are part of the ORF family documented by libopenraw.37 Olympus continued the format through Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds cameras. OM System still records RAW photographs with the .orf extension; the OM-1 manual describes its ORF output as losslessly compressed.8

ORF is a camera-RAW family rather than one frozen interchange specification. Sensor layouts, compression, metadata, and other details can vary by model. This is why an application may open an ORF from one camera but require an update for another.

Working with .orf and alternatives

Keep the original ORF as the master, then export a derivative suited to its destination:

FormatBest forTradeoff
JPEGEmail, galleries, and broad compatibilityLossy; much RAW editing latitude is gone
TIFFHigh-quality interchange and further pixel editingLarge rendered file
DNGA more broadly documented RAW containerConversion can omit proprietary metadata
PNGLossless sharing of a finished renderingDoes not preserve the sensor workflow

OM Workspace can develop ORF files and export finished images. Adobe DNG Converter offers a RAW-oriented conversion path for supported cameras, but Adobe notes that proprietary metadata may not survive unless the original RAW is embedded.9 Keep the untouched ORF after conversion because a rendered or converted copy may not preserve every original measurement and camera-specific tag.
