What kind of file is a .ogg?

A .ogg file conventionally contains Vorbis audio inside an Ogg container. Ogg provides the pages, timing, stream boundaries, and error checks. Vorbis provides the lossy audio compression. The registered audio/ogg MIME type and .ogg suffix are specifically associated with Vorbis-only Ogg audio, although older or mislabeled files may contain something else.¹

Every Ogg page begins with the ASCII capture pattern OggS, or hexadecimal bytes 4F 67 67 53. That identifies the container, not the codec. A reliable inspector also reads the first logical-stream packets to confirm that the audio is Vorbis rather than Opus, Speex, FLAC, Theora video, or another payload.²

How do I open a .ogg on my computer?

VLC is a straightforward player on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile platforms. It supports both the Ogg container and Vorbis audio.³ Audacity can import, edit, and export Ogg Vorbis on desktop systems, while FFmpeg can inspect or convert it. Current browsers commonly play Ogg Vorbis, though support on older Apple devices and unusual codecs can vary.⁴⁵

If a file does not play, check that the download is complete and inspect both the container and codec. For web delivery, send a Vorbis file as audio/ogg, optionally with codecs=vorbis.

History of .ogg

Xiph.Org created Ogg as a vendor-neutral container for streaming multimedia. RFC 3533 documented Ogg bitstream format version 0 in May 2003, including its independently recognizable pages and ability to interleave multiple logical streams.²

Early software commonly used .ogg and application/ogg broadly. RFC 5334 reorganized the conventions in September 2008: .ogg became the specialization for Vorbis-only audio, .oga became the general Ogg-audio suffix, .ogv identified video, and .ogx identified more complex content.¹⁶

Working with .ogg and alternatives

Vorbis normally uses variable-bit-rate encoding, so file size depends on the audio and chosen quality rather than a fixed rate.⁷ For scale, audio averaging 128 kb/s uses about 0.96 MB per minute before container and metadata overhead.

Keep the original or a lossless master when possible. Converting Vorbis directly to MP3, AAC, or Opus decodes and compresses the audio again, which can reduce quality. Also review comments, lyrics, and embedded artwork before sharing a private recording.
