What kind of file is a .oga?
An .oga file is a general-purpose Ogg audio file. Ogg is the binary container, while Vorbis, Opus, Speex, FLAC, or another codec encodes the sound. Unlike the older .ogg convention, which specifically signals Vorbis-only audio, .oga can contain different audio codecs or multiple logical streams.1
Its registered MIME type is audio/ogg. Every Ogg page begins with 4F 67 67 53, the ASCII text OggS. That four-byte marker confirms the Ogg container, but not the codec inside it. A player must inspect the stream headers and support the codec as well as Ogg framing.12
.ogg, MP3, or FLAC file to .oga does not convert its container or codec. Use a media-inspection tool when the filename and contents may disagree.How do I open a .oga on my computer?
- On Windows, macOS, or Linux, VLC is a convenient player. Audacity can import supported Ogg audio for editing, and FFmpeg can inspect or convert it.
- On iPhone, iPad, and Android, use a player that supports both the Ogg container and the codec in the file.
- In a web browser, playback varies by codec and browser version. A desktop media player is the safer choice for an unfamiliar
.ogafile.
Audacity exports Ogg Vorbis with an adjustable quality setting.3 FFmpeg supports the Ogg muxer and demuxer, making it useful for identifying streams before choosing an output format.4
Poly support for .oga
Poly can store, sync, share, version, download, and find .oga files by name. It does not currently infer audio/ogg from the .oga suffix alone. When an upload source supplies that accurate media type, Poly can process supported Ogg audio, extract duration and available tags, use embedded cover art, transcribe intelligible speech, and create audio-similarity data.
Recognized audio opens in Poly's player, although actual playback still depends on the codec and browser. The Poly agent can use supported Ogg audio directly or read its stored transcript. Preserve an accurate audio/ogg label when moving .oga files between systems.
History of .oga
Xiph.Org documented Ogg bitstream format version 0 in RFC 3533 in May 2003.2 Early software commonly labeled all Ogg content as application/ogg and used .ogg broadly.
RFC 5334 introduced the more descriptive audio/ogg and video/ogg media types in September 2008. It assigned .oga as the default extension for predominantly audio Ogg content, while retaining .ogg for Vorbis-only audio and .spx for Speex-only audio.1 The distinction lets a filename communicate the intended media category without pretending to identify every codec inside.
Working with .oga and alternatives

Inspect the codec before conversion. Decoding a lossy Vorbis, Opus, or Speex stream and encoding another lossy format adds another generation of quality loss. Converting to FLAC or WAV preserves the decoded samples, but cannot restore information the original encoder discarded. Keep the original .oga file when future editing or metadata preservation matters.
Open untrusted .oga files with maintained software. Ogg can carry arbitrary binary streams, and RFC 5334 warns implementers to defend against malformed data and extreme declared media properties.1
