What kind of file is a .nrw?

A .nrw file is a Nikon RAW photograph created by supported COOLPIX cameras. It preserves image-sensor data before the camera applies a finished look, so a RAW editor can adjust choices such as white balance and contrast after capture.1

The conventional image/x-nikon-nrw MIME type is not registered by IANA.2 NRW is related to Nikon's TIFF-based NEF family, but its RAW-data organization differs.3 There is no short, NRW-only magic number. A TIFF byte order marker such as 49 49 2A 00 is not enough because TIFF, NEF, and other camera formats can share it. Reliable identification also checks TIFF directories, Nikon camera metadata, and format-specific structure.

Renaming a NEF, TIFF, JPEG, or another RAW file to .nrw does not convert it. The suffix alone cannot prove that the contents are a valid Nikon RAW photograph.

How do I open a .nrw on my computer?

Use a RAW processor that supports the exact camera model:

  • Windows or macOS: Nikon NX Studio views, processes, and edits NEF and NRW images made by Nikon cameras.4
  • Windows or macOS: Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw support NRW-writing COOLPIX models individually. Adobe lists a minimum compatible version for each one.5
  • Linux: A current RAW editor such as darktable or RawTherapee may open the file, with compatibility varying by camera model.

Web browsers do not natively develop NRW photos. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website, message, or presentation.

If an older editor rejects a file from a newer camera, update its camera support before assuming the file is damaged. Recognizing .nrw does not guarantee that an app understands every model that writes it.

Poly support for .nrw

Poly gives NRW photos thumbnails, an in-app image preview, available camera metadata, visual search, and agent understanding. You can find a capture by filename, metadata, color, or visible content, and the Poly agent can reason about the displayed photograph.

The preview is a camera-rendered view rather than a new development of the underlying sensor samples. Use dedicated RAW software for exposure recovery, white-balance changes, lens corrections, and sensor-level inspection. Words photographed inside an ordinary NRW are not indexed as document text. Review timestamps, camera details, and location metadata before sharing an original.

History of .nrw

Nikon announced NRW with the COOLPIX P6000 on August 7, 2008, calling it a new RAW format. The camera reached the market the following month.6 Nikon later adopted NRW in other COOLPIX models. Current Nikon documentation still describes RAW files with the .NRW suffix.1

Early compatibility was limited to a small Nikon-centered workflow. Modern RAW applications support more NRW-writing cameras, but compatibility remains model-specific. NRW and NEF are related Nikon formats, not interchangeable names.

Working with .nrw and alternatives

Keep the NRW as the editable master, then export a derivative for its destination:

Nikon software can save a developed NRW as JPEG or TIFF.7 Keep the original after export because a rendered image cannot recreate the sensor measurements. Likewise, changing .nrw to .nef only changes the filename; it does not create a NEF file.
