What kind of file is a .nef?

A .nef file is a Nikon Electronic Format RAW photograph. It preserves sensor measurements and capture metadata so you can adjust white balance, exposure, tone, sharpening, and color during development. Nikon cameras may record 12-bit or 14-bit NEF data in uncompressed or compressed forms, depending on the model.1

The conventional image/x-nikon-nef MIME type is not registered by IANA.2 NEF has a TIFF-based structure and can begin with 49 49 2A 00 or 4D 4D 00 2A, the ordinary little-endian or big-endian TIFF header. Those bytes are not unique to NEF, so reliable identification also checks TIFF directories, Nikon camera metadata, and format-specific structure.3

Renaming a JPEG, TIFF, DNG, or another RAW file to .nef does not convert it. The suffix alone cannot prove that the contents are a valid Nikon RAW photo.

How do I open a .nef on my computer?

Use software that supports the Nikon camera model that created the file:

  • Windows or macOS: Nikon NX Studio opens, adjusts, and exports compatible NEF images.4
  • Windows or macOS: Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw support Nikon models individually. Adobe lists the minimum compatible version for each camera and limitations for some compression modes.5
  • macOS, iOS, and iPadOS: Apple provides system RAW support for listed Nikon cameras, which compatible apps such as Photos can use.6
  • Linux: RAW editors such as darktable or RawTherapee may open NEF files, with support varying by camera and compression mode.

Web browsers do not natively develop NEF photos. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website or message.

If an older editor rejects a file from a newer camera, update its RAW support before assuming the file is damaged. The shared .nef suffix covers multiple camera generations.

Poly support for .nef

Poly gives NEF photos thumbnails, an in-app image preview, available Exif metadata, visual search, and agent understanding. You can find a capture by filename, camera details, color, or visible content, and the Poly agent can reason about the displayed photograph.

The preview represents a camera-rendered image embedded in the NEF rather than a new development of its raw sensor measurements. Use a dedicated RAW editor for adjustments such as highlight recovery and white balance. Words photographed inside an ordinary NEF are not indexed as document text. Review time, location, camera, lens, and serial metadata before sharing an original.

History of .nef

Nikon used NEF on the D1, its 1999 professional digital SLR. The D1 recorded compressed or uncompressed 12-bit NEF images.7 Nikon has continued using the suffix across later DSLR and Z-series cameras.

NEF has evolved instead of remaining one fixed decoder target. Current files can differ in bit depth, compression, metadata, and internal organization. That is why an application may open NEFs from one Nikon camera but require an update for another.

Working with .nef and alternatives

Keep the original NEF as the master, then export a derivative suited to its destination:

Nikon NX Studio can save developed images as JPEG or TIFF.4 Keep the NEF after export because a rendered image cannot recreate the original sensor measurements or all of the camera's editing latitude.
