What kind of file is an .mpg4?

An .mpg4 file is an uncommon filename for an MP4 media container. RFC 4337 registers the suffix for both video/mp4 and audio/mp4. Use the video type when the presentation has visuals, and the audio type when it contains audio without a visual presentation.¹

MP4 is a container, not a codec. It can organize video, audio, captions, chapters, and metadata while codecs such as H.264, HEVC, AAC, or Opus encode the individual tracks. The extension cannot tell you which codecs are present or whether a particular device can decode them.

There is no registered fixed magic number. MP4-family files are built from typed boxes. An ftyp file-type box commonly appears near the beginning and declares brands such as mp41 or mp42, but related formats use the same box structure. How do I open an .mpg4 on my computer?

VLC opens MP4/MOV input on Windows, macOS, and Linux.³ QuickTime Player opens audio and video on macOS, while FFmpeg can inspect or convert MP4-family media across desktop platforms.⁴⁵

Because .mpg4 is rare, an application may reject the name even when it supports the contents. For a trusted file that a media probe confirms is MP4, make a copy and rename the copy to .mp4, then try again. If the file still fails, the problem may be an unsupported codec, encryption, damage, or a mislabeled container rather than the suffix.

The shorter .mp4 spelling became the familiar convention across cameras, phones, browsers, and editors. .mpg4 remains standards-documented but uncommon, so changing a verified file to .mp4 is often useful for compatibility.

Working with .mpg4 and alternatives

Remuxing rewrites the container without recompressing compatible tracks. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes them, which may be necessary for playback compatibility but can lose quality. After either operation, verify duration, synchronization, captions, chapters, artwork, alternate audio, and metadata before replacing the original.
