What kind of file is an .mp4?

An .mp4 file is usually an MPEG-4 video container, but the suffix can also name an audio-only MP4. Use video/mp4 when the presentation contains video and audio/mp4 when it contains audio without visuals. The rarer application/mp4 label is for MP4 systems data with neither an audio nor visual presentation.1

MP4 is a container, not a codec. It organizes timed tracks, captions, and metadata, while codecs such as H.264, HEVC, AV1, AAC, or Opus encode the media. Two .mp4 files can therefore have different playback results.

There is no registered fixed magic number. MP4 belongs to the ISO Base Media File Format family and is built from typed boxes. An ftyp box commonly appears near the beginning and declares compatible brands, but related MOV, M4V, HEIF, and AVIF files use similar structures. Reliable identification parses the boxes and inspects the tracks rather than trusting the suffix or checking only for ftyp.12

Renaming clip.mov, clip.webm, or song.aac to end in .mp4 does not convert its container or codecs.

How do I open an .mp4 on my computer?

  • On Windows, try Media Player, Movies & TV, or VLC.
  • On macOS, use QuickTime Player, TV, or VLC.
  • On Linux, VLC and MPV open many MP4 codec combinations.
  • On iPhone, iPad, and Android, the standard photo, video, and file apps handle commonly encoded MP4 files.

Modern browsers broadly support MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio.3 Support still depends on the exact codecs, profiles, bit depth, HDR features, encryption, and device decoders. If a file has sound but no picture, or picture but no sound, inspect both track codecs. VLC supports MP4/MOV input and a wide range of audio and video codecs, making it a useful second choice.4

Poly support for .mp4

Poly gives supported MP4 video a representative thumbnail, timeline previews, in-app playback, technical metadata, visual search, searchable speech transcripts, and agent understanding. Metadata can include duration, dimensions, frame rate, codecs, color information, and audio-track details.

An audio-only file explicitly identified as audio/mp4 receives audio playback, available tags and artwork, transcript search, audio similarity, and transcript-based agent access. A filename ending in .mp4 is normally treated as video. Transcript features require decodable audio with audible speech, while silent video can still benefit from visual search.

History of .mp4

MP4 grew from MPEG-4 systems work and Apple's earlier QuickTime design. The first MP4 file format appeared in 2001. MPEG-4 Part 14 replaced it with version 2 in 2003, built on the ISO Base Media File Format.2 RFC 4337 registered the video/mp4, audio/mp4, and application/mp4 media types in 2006 and listed both .mp4 and .mpg4 as extensions.1

The flexible box-and-track design helped .mp4 become a common delivery suffix across browsers, phones, cameras, editors, and streaming workflows. Its flexibility is also why the filename alone cannot promise that a device has every required decoder.

Working with .mp4 and alternatives

NeedPractical choiceTradeoff
Broad browser and device playbackMP4 with H.264 video and AAC audioRe-encoding may reduce quality
Preserve compatible encoded tracksRemux into a new MP4Fast and lossless, but cannot fix an unsupported codec
Open web deliveryWebM with compatible VP9 or AV1 videoPlayback and editing support differ
Audio-only delivery.m4a with AAC or ALACThe clearer suffix may require remuxing

Remuxing rewrites the container without recompressing compatible tracks. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media, which can reduce quality. After either operation, check duration, synchronization, captions, alternate audio, rotation, color, and HDR behavior before deleting the source.

Treat unknown MP4 files as untrusted input and use maintained playback software. MP4 can also contain comments, creation times, captions, location-related metadata, and hidden tracks. Inspect them before publishing sensitive media.1
