What kind of file is an .m4v?
An .m4v file is a video container associated with Apple's iTunes video-file convention. Apple assigns it the Uniform Type Identifier com.apple.m4v-video. The conventional media type is video/x-m4v, although that type is not registered by IANA.12
M4V is closely related to MP4 and QuickTime MOV. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata, but the extension does not identify the codecs inside. Apple device specifications document M4V files containing H.264 or MPEG-4 video with AAC audio.3
There is no short magic number unique to every M4V. Many files have an ftyp box beginning at byte offset 4. Its major and compatible brands provide stronger evidence than the filename, but a reliable inspector must also validate box sizes and examine each track's codec.4
movie.m4v to movie.mp4 changes only the filename. It does not convert codecs, repair a damaged container, or remove purchase protection. How do I open an .m4v on my computer?
On macOS, try QuickTime Player or the Apple TV app first. VLC and MPV are practical choices on Windows, macOS, and Linux. On iPhone, iPad, and Android, playback depends on the app, the codecs, and whether the file is protected.
Modern browsers broadly support H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4-family container, but they do not judge compatibility from .m4v alone.5 If you get sound without picture, or picture without sound, inspect both track codecs.
Some Apple purchases require an authorized computer and the Apple Account used to buy them. Apple permits up to five authorized computers for purchased content.6 Keep protected purchases in an authorized Apple app rather than treating them as ordinary conversion sources.
Poly support for .m4v
Poly gives decodable M4V videos thumbnails, timeline previews, in-app playback, technical metadata, visual search, searchable speech transcripts, and agent understanding. Metadata can include duration, dimensions, frame rate, codecs, color information, and audio-track details.
Transcript search requires usable audio with audible speech. Silent video can still be visually searchable. Protected, damaged, or unsupported streams may limit playback, indexing, or agent access.
History of .m4v
Apple established M4V as its iTunes video-file convention and continues to expose it as a distinct AVFoundation file type.1 Its underlying box structure belongs to the same family as QuickTime movies and ISO Base Media files. Apple calls these structures atoms, while ISO documentation commonly calls them boxes.4
The suffix remains useful because it signals Apple-oriented video and the possibility of purchase controls. It does not guarantee protection, however. An unprotected M4V can be technically similar to an MP4, while two .m4v files can contain different codecs and behave differently.
Working with .m4v and alternatives
Choose a destination based on compatibility and the source tracks:
| Need | Practical choice | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Broad device and browser playback | MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio | May require re-encoding |
| Preserve compatible streams | Remux into MP4 | Fast and lossless, but only when every needed track is compatible |
| Open web delivery | WebM with a supported codec combination | Often requires re-encoding |
| Keep an Apple purchase | Retain the original M4V | May require account authorization |
Remuxing changes the container without recompressing compatible media. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes it, which can reduce quality. Before deleting the source, check the entire output for duration, synchronization, subtitles, alternate audio, color, and HDR behavior.
