What does model/vnd.usdz+zip represent?

model/vnd.usdz+zip is the registered media type for a .usdz Universal Scene Description package. USDZ is a ZIP-based package designed to deliver a USD scene and permitted assets as one object. The USDZ specification requires an uncompressed, unencrypted archive, with package entries aligned for direct access; a native USD layer is needed first when the package is opened as a stage.12

A package can contain USD layers plus supported images and audio. The single-file layout is useful for delivery and viewing, while the package remains less convenient for ordinary text editing than .usda. A ZIP signature alone is not enough to establish that an archive is valid USDZ: its contents and layout must also follow the package rules.

Opening and converting USDZ

Apple documents USDZ as a delivery format for Quick Look experiences, and OpenUSD publishes the package specification.31 OpenUSD tools and Blender can inspect or convert USD content.4 Extract or convert to .usd, .usda, or .usdc when you need to edit individual layers. Preserve the package when one portable delivery file matters.

Support in Poly

Poly previews supported geometry, makes the filename searchable, and provides visual similarity for supported 3D content. Available mesh, mesh-instance, node, material, vertex, triangle, and animation counts appear in the 3D Details panel when present. An optimized rendition of the 3D object or scene is provided to the agent, allowing compact yet information-rich multimodal interaction with 3D files.

ConstructVerified handling
Packaged USD geometry and scene structureSupported when the package contains readable scene geometry
Materials and available texturesSupported when packaged data is usable; exact shading may vary
Authored cameras and lightsNot retained in the preview
Animation clipsLimited support when represented in accessible package data
Composition and external referencesNot fully supported; missing geometry can prevent a complete result
Stage orientationDeclared Y-up and Z-up stages are normalized for consistent geometry inspection

Poly treats the package as one uploaded object. A package that lacks usable geometry may still be identifiable while producing limited visual content; missing optional texture data can change its appearance.
