What kind of file is a .rw2?
A .rw2 file is a RAW photograph made by Panasonic Lumix cameras. It preserves camera-sensor measurements and capture metadata so a RAW editor can choose white balance, exposure, color, noise reduction, and sharpening after the shot. A camera-finished JPEG is easier to share, but it has much less editing latitude.
The conventional image/x-panasonic-rw2 MIME type is widely used but is not registered by IANA.1 RW2 is related to TIFF and uses Panasonic-specific tags and compression. It normally begins with the bytes 49 49 55 00, or IIU\0 in ASCII, which distinguish it from an ordinary little-endian TIFF header.2
.rw2 does not convert it. Software should validate the signature, directory offsets, camera metadata, and sensor layout rather than trusting the suffix alone.How do I open a .rw2 on my computer?
Use software that supports the exact Lumix model:
- Windows or macOS: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Camera Raw support Panasonic cameras individually. Adobe lists the minimum compatible application version for each model.3
- Windows or macOS: SILKYPIX Developer Studio can process and edit RAW photographs. Panasonic recommends it in current Lumix camera documentation.4
- macOS, iOS, and iPadOS: Apple provides system RAW support for listed Lumix models, which compatible apps can use.5
- Linux: darktable, RawTherapee, or another RAW editor may work, with compatibility depending on the camera and software version.
Web browsers do not natively develop RW2 sensor data. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website or message.
Poly support for .rw2

The preview represents an embedded camera-rendered JPEG rather than a new development of the RAW sensor mosaic. Use a dedicated RAW editor for demosaicing, highlight recovery, lens correction, and precise color. Words photographed inside an ordinary RW2 are not indexed as document text. Review time, location, camera, creator, and copyright metadata before sharing an original.
History of .rw2
Panasonic introduced RW2 with its 2008 Lumix generation. LUMIX RAW Codec 1.0, released on October 30, 2008, supported RW2 files from the DMC-LX3, DMC-FX150, DMC-FZ28, and DMC-G1.6 The extension succeeded Panasonic's earlier .raw convention and remains in use across Lumix compact, Micro Four Thirds, and full-frame cameras.
RW2 is a camera-RAW family rather than one frozen interchange specification. Panasonic has used several RAW compression variants, and decoder support can vary by camera model.7
Working with .rw2 and alternatives
Keep the original RW2 as the master, then export a derivative suited to its destination:

Adobe DNG Converter can convert supported camera RAW files to DNG and optionally embed the original. Adobe cautions that proprietary metadata may otherwise be omitted.8 Keep the untouched RW2 alongside important conversions because a rendered or converted copy may not preserve every sensor measurement and Panasonic-specific tag.
