What kind of file is a .raf?
A .raf file is a Fujifilm RAW photograph. It preserves camera sensor data and capture metadata so a RAW processor can choose the demosaicing, white balance, exposure, color rendering, noise reduction, and sharpening used for the finished image. Fujifilm describes RAF as its original RAW format and continues to use it across X Series and GFX cameras.1
The conventional image/x-fujifilm-raf MIME type is not registered by IANA. Some software instead uses image/x-fuji-raf.23 Classic RAF files begin with the 16-byte ASCII signature FUJIFILMCCD-RAW , or 46 55 4A 49 46 49 4C 4D 43 43 44 2D 52 41 57 20 in hexadecimal. Their directory can point to a JPEG preview, metadata, and raw sensor data.3

Use software that supports the Fujifilm camera model and its recording mode:
- Windows or macOS: FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO uses a connected compatible camera's image processor to develop its RAF files with Fujifilm color and Film Simulation rendering.4
- Windows or macOS: Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw support Fujifilm models individually. Adobe lists the minimum compatible version for each camera.5
- macOS, iOS, and iPadOS: Apple supplies system RAW support for listed Fujifilm cameras and compression modes, which compatible apps such as Photos can use.6
- Linux: RAW editors such as darktable or RawTherapee may open RAF files, with support depending on the camera and compression mode.
Web browsers do not natively develop RAF photographs. Export a JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG copy for a website or message.
Poly support for .raf

Use a dedicated RAW editor for sensor-level adjustments such as highlight recovery, white balance, and demosaicing. Words photographed inside an ordinary RAF are not indexed as document text. Review timestamps, location, camera, lens, and serial metadata before sharing an original.
History of .raf
Fujifilm's FinePix S2 Pro established the recognizable RAF workflow in 2002. Fujifilm announced the camera in May 2002 with 12-bit CCD RAW recording and software that could convert those captures to 16-bit TIFF files.7 Adobe's camera-support table identifies RAF as the S2 Pro's RAW extension.5
RAF has evolved without changing its familiar suffix. Files can use Bayer or Fujifilm X-Trans sensor layouts, different bit depths, several compression modes, and specialized multi-image captures. A newer camera can therefore require a newer decoder even though the filename still ends in .raf.
Working with .raf and alternatives
Keep the original RAF as the master, then export a derivative suited to its destination:

Conversion is a development step, not a filename change. Keep the RAF after export because a rendered derivative cannot recreate all of the original sensor measurements. Take special care with HDR RAF files: Adobe warns that conversion to DNG discards every raw image except the first unless the original RAF is embedded.8
