Poly supportPartial. Poly provides image features when a PPM file is identified as image/ppm, but does not infer that type from .ppm alone.
Indexed by PolyPartial. Correctly classified PPM images receive dimensions, filename indexing, and visual similarity; other files remain searchable by name.
Preview in PolyPartial. Correctly classified, decodable PPM images open in Poly's image viewer.

What kind of file is a .ppm?

A .ppm file is usually a Portable Pixmap, the full-color member of the Netpbm image family. It stores a rectangular grid of red, green, and blue samples without compression or transparency. The format is intentionally simple, which makes it useful for graphics exercises, render tests, Unix pipelines, and intermediate files. It is inefficient for distributing finished images.1

Check the first two bytes rather than trusting the filename:

HeaderVariantPixel data
P3 (50 33)Plain PPMASCII decimal RGB samples
P6 (50 36)Raw PPMBinary RGB samples

The header also gives the width, height, and maximum sample value. Raw samples occupy one byte when that maximum is below 256 and two big-endian bytes otherwise.1

Renaming another image to .ppm does not convert its pixels. A generic .pnm file may contain PPM, PBM, or PGM data, so inspect its header before choosing a decoder.2

How do I open a .ppm on my computer?

Netpbm, GIMP, and ImageMagick can open PPM files on Windows, macOS, or Linux. GIMP can export either ASCII or raw PPM through its PNM support.3 Many programming and imaging libraries can decode the format too.

Web browsers are not a dependable PPM viewer. Convert the image to PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF before publishing it on a website. If an app rejects a valid-looking file, try a Netpbm tool first. Older readers may support only one image per file or a maximum sample value of 255.1

Poly support for .ppm

Poly can create a thumbnail, show an image preview, extract dimensions, enable visual search, and let the agent reason about the pixels when a PPM is correctly identified as image/ppm.

Poly does not currently infer image/ppm from the .ppm suffix alone. An upload without an accurate media type may be handled as text or generic binary data and remain searchable only by name. Text drawn into the image is not indexed as document text. For consistent image features, convert the file to .png before uploading.

History of .ppm

Jef Poskanzer distributed Pbmplus in 1988 as a toolkit built around the Portable Bitmap format. By the end of that year he had added grayscale PGM and color PPM. Netpbm replaced Pbmplus in 1993 and continues the format family today.4

That lineage explains PPM's emphasis on transparent structure rather than compact storage. Netpbm calls it a lowest-common-denominator color format: easy for a small program to write and analyze, but highly redundant and sparse in metadata.1

No PPM media type is registered with IANA. Netpbm documents image/x-portable-pixmap as the conventional label and image/x-portable-anymap for the broader PNM family.15 Some software instead uses image/ppm.

Working with .ppm and alternatives

PPM size is predictable. A raw P6 image with 8-bit samples needs three bytes per pixel plus a small header, so a 1920 by 1080 image uses about 5.93 MiB before filesystem overhead. The plain P3 form is usually larger because every sample is written as decimal text.

Converting PPM to PNG can preserve its represented pixels losslessly, but PPM carries little color-management information. Keep the source until you have checked colors and sample precision in the result.
