What kind of file is a .otc?

An .otc file is an OpenType Font Collection. It packages multiple OpenType faces in one binary file and can share identical font tables among them. Collections are useful for related styles or scripts with glyphs in common. OpenType collections can contain TrueType, CFF, CFF2, or SVG outlines.1

The registered media type is font/collection. Microsoft documents .otc and .ttc as collection suffixes; an OpenType collection begins with the ttcf signature.1 A suffix by itself cannot verify that the file is a valid collection.

How do I open an .otc file?

Use a font editor that documents OpenType collection support to inspect or export an .otc file. Apple documents Font Book support for .ttc, while handling of .otc varies across applications and operating systems. Check the specific application's documentation before installing an OTC file. Renaming a file does not convert its contents.2

To work with one style on its own, export that face as .otf or .ttf using a collection-aware font editor. The related .ttc suffix is also used for collections; OpenType's modern collection format is not restricted to TrueType outlines.1

Poly support for .otc

Poly identifies font collection data from the file contents. It recognizes the ttcf signature and can then extract font metadata and face count and create a rendered specimen. The .otc suffix by itself is not currently a type hint, so identification depends on valid collection contents.

For a recognized collection, Poly's family, style, and glyph details and its preview describe the first face. The specimen can be used for visual similarity search. Other faces are included in the total count but do not receive individual previews. The Poly agent can inspect the sample image and summary metadata, but cannot read each member's complete glyph set or tables.

History and alternatives

OpenType collections grew from the TrueType Collection structure to package multiple OpenType fonts together. The IETF registered font/collection in RFC 8081 in February 2017. Microsoft lists .otc alongside .ttc as an extension reserved for collection files.1

Use a collection when multiple related faces should travel together. Use a separate .otf or .ttf when software or a web page needs one face. Check the license before exporting or redistributing individual faces.
