What kind of file is a .odt?
An .odt file is an editable OpenDocument Text document. It can hold formatted text, headings, lists, tables, images, comments, fields, and styles. Its registered MIME type is application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text.1
ODT is usually a ZIP package containing XML documents and embedded resources. The common 50 4B 03 04 opening bytes identify a ZIP-like package, but not ODT specifically. DOCX, EPUB, and other formats share them. A stronger check confirms that the package's first, uncompressed mimetype entry contains application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text.12
report.docx, report.zip, or report.pdf to report.odt does not convert it. A word processor must open the source and save a valid ODT package. How do I open a .odt on my computer?
- On Windows, macOS, or Linux, LibreOffice Writer opens and saves ODT as its standard editable text-document format.3
- On Windows or macOS, Microsoft Word can open and save ODT files.
- On iPhone, iPad, and Android, use a compatible office app such as Collabora Office or Microsoft Word.
- In a web browser, use an online office suite. Browsers do not natively lay out ODT documents.
Microsoft documents differences between ODT and Word's DOCX format. Some comments, tracked changes, content controls, fields, frames, tables, and text boxes can behave differently after conversion.4 For an important document, reopen the saved copy in the recipient's application and check fonts, page breaks, equations, tables, revision marks, and anchored objects.
Poly support for .odt
Poly gives ODT files a first-page thumbnail, a connected document preview, full-text search with OCR support, and page-aware similarity search. Successfully processed content is also available to the Poly agent, which can read the document's text and rendered pages.
Preview requires a network connection. Password-protected, damaged, or unsupported documents may not produce the rich preview and content-aware index described here.
History of .odt
The .odt suffix belongs to the OpenDocument Format family. OASIS approved OpenDocument 1.0 on May 1, 2005, building on earlier OpenOffice.org XML formats. ISO and IEC later published it as ISO/IEC 26300:2006.5 IANA registered the ODT media type and extension in 2006.1
OpenDocument was designed as an open, application-independent format for editable office documents. ODT is its word-processing member, alongside ODS for spreadsheets and ODP for presentations.
Working with .odt and alternatives
| Format | Best for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| ODT | Editing in OpenDocument-oriented workflows | Some Word-specific features may change |
| DOCX | Editing in Microsoft Office workflows | ODF-specific behavior may change |
| Stable review, printing, and distribution | Harder to edit as a structured document | |
| Plain text or Markdown | Portable, simple text | Loses page layout and rich document features |
Keep the original until you verify a conversion. PDF is useful when page appearance matters, while DOCX is often more practical for Word-centered collaboration. Plain text and Markdown preserve the words but discard most layout, images, comments, fields, and metadata.
