What kind of file is a .odp?

An .odp file is an editable OpenDocument Presentation. It can contain slides, text, images, shapes, charts, speaker notes, master pages, transitions, and animations. Its registered MIME type is application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.presentation.¹

ODP is usually a ZIP package containing XML documents and embedded resources. Because PPTX, EPUB, ODT, and many other formats also begin with the ZIP bytes 50 4B, that signature alone does not identify an ODP. A stronger check looks for the package's uncompressed mimetype entry and confirms that it declares the ODP media type.¹²

How do I open a .odp on my computer?

• On Windows or macOS, use LibreOffice Impress or a current supported version of Microsoft PowerPoint.
• On Linux, LibreOffice Impress is the most direct option.
• In a web browser, use an online office suite. Browsers do not render ODP files by themselves.

LibreOffice reads and writes ODF Presentation files as .odp.³ PowerPoint can also open and save the format, but Microsoft documents differences in how some animations, transitions, charts, themes, comments, macros, and other features transfer.⁴ When exchanging a complex deck, review the saved copy in the recipient's application.

Poly support for .odp

The preview requires an internet connection. Password-protected, damaged, or unsupported presentations may not produce a preview or content index. Poly presents the readable deck rather than running embedded scripts, macros, or external data connections.

History of .odp

The .odp suffix belongs to the OpenDocument Format family. OASIS approved OpenDocument 1.0 as a standard on May 1, 2005, building on earlier OpenOffice.org XML formats.⁵ IANA created the ODP media-type registration in 2006 and records the extension, binary encoding, and package-identification pattern.¹

OpenDocument was designed as an open, application-independent office-document format. Its presentation member gave office suites a standardized alternative to application-specific slide formats while keeping slides editable.

Working with .odp and alternatives

Choose the output based on what needs to survive:

Keep the original ODP until you have checked the converted copy slide by slide. Pay special attention to fonts, charts, transitions, animations, hidden slides, and speaker notes.

Treat an unexpected .odp file as active document content. The IANA registration warns that OpenDocument files may contain scripts, external objects, and hyperlinks.¹ Open untrusted presentations with current software, avoid enabling active content unnecessarily, and inspect notes, hidden slides, comments, and document properties before sharing.
