What kind of file is a .numbers?

A .numbers file is an Apple Numbers spreadsheet. It can hold multiple tables on a flexible sheet, along with formulas, charts, images, shapes, and comments. Current single-file documents use the registered application/vnd.apple.numbers MIME type.¹

The registered format is a ZIP container, but Apple has not published its internal spreadsheet specification. Its first bytes may therefore be the common ZIP header 50 4B 03 04. That signature alone is not enough to identify a Numbers document because .xlsx, EPUB, JAR, and ordinary ZIP files can begin the same way.¹

How do I open a .numbers on my computer?

• On Mac, iPhone, or iPad, open the spreadsheet in Apple Numbers.
• On Windows or Mac, upload it to Numbers for iCloud in a supported browser. The browser itself does not natively display the file.
• To use Microsoft Excel, first export the spreadsheet from Numbers as .xlsx. Excel does not directly open the native format.²

Apple says current Numbers apps and Numbers for iCloud can open all Numbers versions. A file that arrives as a macOS package directory may not transfer correctly through email or web upload. Numbers saves one file by default, while Apple suggests package storage for spreadsheets over 500 MB and warns that some transfer services do not accept packages.³

Poly support for .numbers

Poly recognizes .numbers spreadsheets and gives supported single-file documents page thumbnails, a connected preview, searchable spreadsheet text and visual content, and agent reading. This is partial support because the preview is a reading representation rather than the native editable workbook.

The Poly agent can work with visible values, labels, charts, and page layout after processing succeeds. It does not inspect native formulas or the editable package structure. Password-protected, damaged, package-directory, or incompatible files may have limited processing, and some Numbers-specific layout or interactive controls may render differently.

History of .numbers

Apple introduced Numbers with iWork '08 on August 7, 2007. The original release distinguished itself from conventional full-sheet grids by placing multiple independent tables on a flexible graphics canvas.⁴

IANA registered application/vnd.apple.numbers on August 9, 2018. The registration applies to ZIP-based single-file documents and lists application/x-iwork-numbers-sffnumbers as a deprecated alias. Older Numbers documents stored as directories fall outside that registration.¹
