What kind of file is a .gsheet?

A .gsheet file is commonly a Google Sheets shortcut used by desktop sync software. It points to a spreadsheet stored in Google Drive; it is not the workbook itself and does not contain all of the sheet's cells, formulas, charts, or formatting.

The native Google Drive item uses the MIME type application/vnd.google-apps.spreadsheet. Google documents that MIME type for identifying native Sheets items in the Drive API, while native Workspace files are opened in their web applications or exported to another format.¹² Google does not document .gsheet as a native Drive API file extension.

Because the suffix identifies a pointer rather than a portable workbook, copying a .gsheet file away from its Google Drive context may leave you with a shortcut that no longer opens the sheet. It is not equivalent to an .xlsx or .ods file.

How do I open a .gsheet on my computer?

When the file is managed by Google Drive for desktop, double-clicking it should open the linked Google Sheet in your browser or the configured Google application. You must be signed in to an account that has permission to view the sheet. Google Drive for desktop supports browsing Drive files on Windows and macOS, with streaming and mirroring determining how cloud files appear locally.³

If the shortcut is no longer connected to Drive, open the sheet from Google Drive or Google Sheets instead. A Drive file ID or a URL such as https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/SPREADSHEET_ID/edit is more useful for recovering access than the shortcut's filename.

For a portable copy, open the sheet in Google Sheets and export it as .xlsx, .ods, .csv, or another suitable format. CSV export contains only the first sheet, while workbook formats preserve more spreadsheet structure.⁴

Poly support for .gsheet

Poly can store and retrieve a .gsheet shortcut as a file, but the suffix alone does not identify a native Google Sheets resource to Poly. Its linked spreadsheet is therefore not automatically previewed, indexed, or made readable to the Poly agent.

For rich Poly support, connect Google Drive and import the native Google Sheets item, or upload an exported workbook. Native Sheets items can receive a spreadsheet preview, thumbnails, content-aware search, and agent reading when the connected account can access them.⁵

History and alternatives for .gsheet

The .gsheet convention follows the rise of Google Drive's desktop integration, which lets cloud documents appear alongside local files. It is a convenience link for a cloud-first workflow, not a long-term interchange format. Google Drive's current desktop documentation describes cloud streaming and local mirroring, but does not present shortcut files as independent spreadsheet documents.³

Use a .gsheet shortcut when you want quick access to a live, shared sheet. Choose .xlsx for broad workbook interchange, .ods for OpenDocument workflows, or .csv for simple tabular data. Keep the original Google Sheet when collaboration, formulas, permissions, and revision history matter.
