.gif File Extension
.gif file is, how to open GIF images and animations, how Poly supports them, and when a modern format works better. File extension details for .gif
Partial Support| File type | Graphics Interchange Format image |
|---|---|
| MIME type | |
| Encoding | Binary, GIF87a or GIF89a with LZW-compressed indexed pixels |
| Operating systems | Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android |
| Opens with | Web browsers, Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, Adobe Photoshop |
| Poly support | Yes. Poly recognizes GIF images and provides thumbnails, preview, and visual search. |
| Indexed by Poly | Partial. Poly indexes the filename and visual appearance of a representative still frame. |
| Preview in Poly | Yes. GIF files open in Poly's image viewer, where supported browsers play animation. |
| Poly agent | Partial. The Poly agent can understand a static preview, but not the complete animation timeline. |
What kind of file is a .gif?
A .gif file is a Graphics Interchange Format image. It uses the image/gif MIME type and can contain either one still image or a sequence of timed frames. Valid files begin with the ASCII header GIF87a or GIF89a, represented by the bytes 47 49 46 38 37 61 or 47 49 46 38 39 61.12
GIF compresses indexed pixels losslessly with LZW, but each image block has a palette of at most 256 colors. Converting a full-color photograph to GIF can therefore introduce banding or dithering before the lossless compression step. GIF89a can mark one palette color as transparent, but it cannot express the smooth alpha transparency available in PNG, WebP, and AVIF.23
.gif does not convert it. Check for a GIF87a or GIF89a header when a file's contents are uncertain. How do I open a .gif on my computer?
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari releases display GIF files directly, including animation.3 You can drag the file into a browser window on Windows, macOS, or Linux. Microsoft Photos and Apple Preview are convenient for ordinary viewing, while Adobe Photoshop can save documents with one or more frames as an animated GIF.4
Mobile browsers, photo apps, messaging apps, and file viewers commonly open GIFs too. If an animation appears frozen, try a current browser. Some image tools show only a single frame.
Treat unexpected downloads as untrusted even when they end in .gif. The suffix alone does not establish the file type or guarantee that its contents are safe.
Poly support for .gif
Poly recognizes GIF files, records their dimensions, creates static thumbnails, and makes them searchable by filename and visual similarity. The original opens in Poly's image viewer, so animation plays when the browser supports it.
Thumbnails, visual search, and agent understanding use a representative still rather than the whole timeline. Text drawn into a GIF is not indexed as document text, and embedded comments are not searchable metadata. If an important detail appears only in a later frame, export that frame as a PNG or use a video format so Poly can work with it directly.
History of .gif
CompuServe introduced GIF87a in 1987 as a hardware-independent raster format for online exchange. GIF89a followed in July 1989, adding control and extension blocks used for frame delays, transparent color, comments, and application-specific data.2
The familiar animation behavior is built from image blocks on a logical canvas. A Graphic Control Extension stores delay in hundredths of a second and tells a decoder how to compose the next frame. The file version is a feature marker, not a quality rating.
Working with .gif and alternatives
Choose a replacement based on what the file needs to do:
| Need | Consider | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp still artwork | PNG | Full-color lossless pixels and alpha transparency |
| Short silent animation | Animated WebP, APNG, or AVIF | Modern color and transparency with better compression options |
| Longer photographic motion | MP4 or WebM | Temporal compression and playback controls |
| Broad legacy compatibility | GIF | Long-standing browser and application support |
GIF remains useful for small, simple loops and legacy workflows. It has no audio, built-in playback controls, HDR, wide-gamut color, or partial transparency. For meaningful motion, video is often easier to compress and make accessible.
Converting an animation to ordinary PNG or JPEG preserves only a selected frame. JPEG also removes transparency and can blur sharp edges. When converting to animated WebP, AVIF, APNG, or video, check that frame delays, looping, and frame disposal still behave correctly.
