What kind of file is a .elf?

A .elf file is usually a binary in the Executable and Linkable Format. The filename does not tell you its exact role. One ELF container can hold a runnable program, relocatable object, shared library, or core dump. Unix executables often have no extension at all, while firmware and embedded-development workflows commonly add .elf to make build artifacts obvious.1

Every ELF file starts with 7F 45 4C 46, which is 0x7F followed by the ASCII letters ELF. Later header fields identify its 32-bit or 64-bit class, byte order, target architecture, ABI, and object type.2

There is no registered ELF-specific MIME type. application/x-executable is a common unregistered label for runnable ELF files, while application/octet-stream is a generic fallback. Object files and shared libraries may receive still other deployed labels.

Renaming a binary to .elf does not convert it. Check the header and target details before choosing a loader or analysis tool.

How do I open a .elf on my computer?

Inspect an unfamiliar ELF without executing it:

  • On Linux and other Unix-like systems, run file firmware.elf and readelf -h firmware.elf first.
  • On Windows, use WSL or a native build of LLVM's llvm-readobj.
  • On macOS, use llvm-readobj or a reverse-engineering tool such as Ghidra. macOS normally runs Mach-O binaries, not ELF programs.

GNU readelf supports both 32-bit and 64-bit ELF files. It can show the file header, segments, sections, symbols, relocations, and dynamic-linking information.3 Ghidra is useful when you need interactive disassembly and deeper analysis.

ELF files can contain executable code. Do not run an unknown file merely to identify it. Static inspection is safer, although analysis tools should still be kept patched.

Poly support for .elf

History of .elf

ELF first appeared with Unix System V and became the object format defined by the System V Application Binary Interface.14 Its two complementary views were a major practical strength: sections organize material for linking and analysis, while segments describe how a loader builds a process image.

The format now supports many processors and operating systems through a generic ABI plus processor-specific supplements. The .elf suffix is only a naming convention. Linux programs and shared libraries more commonly use no extension or .so, while embedded toolchains often retain .elf for the information-rich linked output.

Working with .elf and alternatives

Choose an artifact based on what the next tool needs:

GNU objcopy can extract selected ELF sections into a raw binary or another supported object format, but that operation may discard symbols, relocation data, debug information, and address context.5 Keep the ELF file as the master build artifact when those details matter.

An ELF file is not portable merely because another system recognizes its header. CPU architecture, bitness, byte order, ABI, interpreter, and shared-library dependencies must all match. To target Windows, macOS, or another processor reliably, rebuild from source with the appropriate toolchain rather than changing the extension.
